what are some good back exercises for someone with lower back problems

    • Lower back problems are often caused by poor flexibility in the hamstring and glutes. Definitely start stretching those. The opposite muscle
group is your lower abs. You’ll probably want to strengthen those as well. Even though it sounds contrary you should probably back off on
lower back training until you work on these imbalances first.

Good Afternoon and thank you for posting such a terrific site. I will read and sort through all the info. but I have a comment and then a question. First, I always wanted to be strong. I’m 55 and have been lifting since age 13. While my desire was to be strong, I never wanted the power builders heavy set physique. I wanted something more athletic and appealing. But the bodybuilders physique was too stiff for me. And, for me at least, not athletic. So I meandered my way to my current physique which is athletic (though I now have a gut I can’t stand). So when I read about your power building philosophy I was sold. That is what I’ve been looking and seeking for 42 years. I wonder if its too late…But thank you for this. My question is this. I’ve had 2 shoulder surgeries and don’t want to hurt myself again. I’m currently benching about 330-335 1 rep max. I want to get up to 360 …and knowing me..who knows upward to 400? At any rate, I’ve been instructed by some to lower the weight about 85 to 90% so as not to strain my shoulder again. As I’m not planning on entering any competitions I don’t see too much wrong with this. However, my pride says I’m not truly doing the lift properly. Can you help me develop a plan to raise my bench to my goals and do so in a way that will not put undo stress on my shoulder. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you again!!!

    • Hi Phil,

First in response to your comment. I totally agree. And since power building is the strength of a powerlifter with the looks of a bodybuiler, I do have to admit being athletic and mobile is also very important to me even if that’s not included in the power building term. You’ve got a lot of great experience and we’re looking forward to hearing what you have to share.

Have you watched my “How To Bench Press Video”? Do that if you haven’t. Lets make sure you are tucking your elbows to avoid any possible shoulder problems that may steaming from your technique. Doctors will always tell you to take it easy and not lift heavy weight. That’s there job. But lowering your working weight a bit shouldn’t be a problem either like you said. You have 18 routines to pick from in Bench Press Explosion. After watching the technique video look those over and see if there’s one that gets you excited. As for being too late…you’re never too late, unless you think you are.

      Keep training hard,

      Mike
